WELCOME TO BEAUTIFUL
MAT-SU BOROUGH
MATANUSKA SUSITNA
Matanuska-Susitna Valley

Ever wonder where all those giant, world record-breaking,
vegetables come from? Or maybe you have the desire to view some
of Alaska’s produce and dairy farms. If a slow paced agricultural
lifestyle is your desire, than the Mat-Su Valley is the place to be.
The Valley, as it’s commonly known, is located just thirty minutes
north of Anchorage on both the Glen and Parks Highway. Every
year the town of Palmer hosts the Alaska State Fair, an attraction
that brings in thousands of visitors, each hoping to view the giant
oversized cabbage, gobble down delicious fair food, and ride the
exhilarating attractions.

If you head north on the Parks Hwy you’ll pass right through the
city of Wasilla, one of this country’s fastest growing cities. Almost
akin to a “little Anchorage”, Wasilla is the heart of the commercial
industry within the Valley. Restaurants, hotels, galleries, and shops
abound in this city, making it a great stopping point on your sojourn
north. Drive about 25 miles west of the city and you’ll pass through
the town of Willow, “official” starting point for the Iditarod and the
once potential site for Alaska’s capital.

If rock-climbing and mountaineering are your interests, head 120
miles north of Anchorage (past Wasilla and Willow) and take a
jaunt down the 14-mile Talkeetna Spur Road to the sleepy town of
Talkeetna. As the gateway to Mt. McKinley, Talkeetna attracts
thousands of visitors each hoping to conquer the continent’s tallest
mountain. Here, you can get to know some of Alaska’s friendliest
people while listening to unparalleled, live, blue-grass music at one
of the few bars located on historic “Main Street” (which stretches,
maybe two blocks). Take a fast-paced motorboat tour along the
Susitna River or charter a helicopter to take you to the very peek of
Mt. McKinley where you can land on one of the many glaciers
hugging the mountain. With so much to offer, the Matanuska-
Susitna Valley is definitely a place to experience the Alaskan
lifestyle in all its many guises.
