Points of Interest
Thunderbird Falls
These spectacular falls are the terminus of a comfortable one mile family walk on a well maintained trail. It is a
must see for all who visit this community! This popular site is located to the north of Chugiak with access off the
Glenn Highway.
Of cultural interest is the Eklutna Village Historical Park centered in the native village
of Eklutna.
This site is the home of St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church. The church, documented as the oldest
building in Anchorage with a construction date of approximately 1830, provides a glimpse into the
historic Russian influence in the region. On the church grounds are brightly colored native spirit
houses which rise above the graves in the ancestral burial ground.

The Chugach State Park Eagle River Nature Center
The Nature Center is located at mile 12 of Eagle River Road. This facility offers a "hands on" interpretive nature
center as well as self-guided trails into the Park. Volunteers are available at the Nature Center to help answer
questions and direct hikers. Summer and winter staffing hours vary. Call (907) 694-2108.
South Fork Falls
Located out Hiland Road adjacent to Spirit Park and is another natural treasure for visitors and residents alike.
On the church grounds are brightly colored native spirit houses which rise above the graves in the ancestral burial ground.

Scottish Highland Games
We welcome the Scottish Highland Games to Eagle River at Lions Park. This all day event features traditional Scottish Games and massing of the bag pipe bands in a spectacular cultural display. Come celebrate the Scottish heritage and visit us in Eagle River 4th Saturday of June each year! www.alaskascottish.org

Bear Paw Festival 2011
July 6-10
Beginning in 1985, the Chugiak-Eagle River Chamber of Commerce created the Bear Paw Festival to
celebrate the community and to share the bountiful beauty of the area with others. The Festival has
grown along with the community since its creation.
FUN EVENTS INCLUDE...
The Festival features events such as the Teddy Bear Picnic & Family Fun Day, Classic Car Show, Bear
Paw Pageant where young men and women compete for the title of Royalty for the festival and vie for
post-secondary scholarship opportunities, Bicycle Safety Rodeo, 5K run, Slippery Salmon Olympics,
Bear Paw Salmon Cook-off, Dog & Owner Look-a-like Contest, Running with The Bears - 300 Yard Fun
Run (Because after 300 yards it isn't fun anymore!) are some of the highlights of the weekend . . . THE
GRAND PARADE!. The parade is one of the largest in the state. In addition, Golden Wheel
Amusements provides carnival rides and games for one and all!
The Bear Paw Festival is a labor of love for the citizens of Chugiak-Eagle River. Volunteer hours are as
long as the days of the Midnight Sun, but this community comes together to share part of itself with
others.Come, adventure, explore, experience, trek and share during the Bear Paw Festival and enjoy!
